From one experience, a demanding way

The experience of Phu TRAN VAN : The values, the collective sense and the perpetual commitment.

 I- My childhood

I was born in Hue, the last imperial capital of Vietnam, at the beginning of the war.

Hue is considered the Vietnam's Florence.

Hue, by its mildness, relaxed rhythm of life and romanticism, left a mark in my soul for ever.

My parents, united to my successive schools and teachers, transferred firstly to me the values, of which the passion for the people and the courage. I then developed and applied these values in my life .

The courage: My parents raised 11 children (9 sons and 2 daughters) during the war. We all crossed the whole Vietnam War remaining intact. My father is teacher of French in Hue.

The passion for the people :My family’s house in Hue always hosted students: children, adolescents, we shared our lives with others who are brothers: the life was beautiful and joyful in Dong Da street, Hue.

III- The New Year of 1968. The break-up.

I was 13. The war entered in force into Hue, like in other cities in South Vietnam. Our house is destroyed and my father – 57 at that time – must rebuild everything in another city, Danang.

There was no system of retirement pension. My father still faced up to things, with his courage and sense of duty/responsibility .

IV- 1969 – Saigon. First commitment

I was 14, and was in 11th class at Jean-Jacques ROUSSEAU High School in Saigon, equivalent to Henri IV High School in Paris (a top ranked high school).

Each evening, I taught individual courses to various pupils in the city to help my family, while at the same moment, my classmates was attending their individual courses.

My parents did not ask me to: I did it voluntarily for the first time. For the first time I took over the value of responsibility transmitted by my parents, by my own commitment.

V- The 27th April 1975

I left Vietnam – decided after 3 hours of reflection. It was 3 days before the war ended.

The trip Saigon --> Subic Bay Philippines --> Guam --> Arkansas brought me to the United States.

I arbitrated between a scholarship offered by the US government in one of the country’s famous university (Stanford, Berkeley… among others) and an one-way air ticket to go where I wanted: I chose France, I followed my convictions instead of the safety.

The courage it’s also this : to follow the personal conviction

The encounter with France. I was 20

. I found a job in Paris during the flight that brought me there.
. I conducted two activities in Paris: university and professional occupation, on the go, as in Vietnam.
. I discovered France, Paris, the city of lights, I also discover Maxime Le Forestier and the romantic passions illuminating these winter days in the university hall of residence (Residence Universitaire in Antony - Paris region)

. My commitment vis-à-vis my family went on : with my two brothers’, my cash remittance was a lifebelt to my family.

The « collective commitment », it’s a concrete thing, it’s the sincere and committed attention, firstly to the relatives, before spreading to others: Colleagues – Teammates – Brother-in-arms and the community as a whole.

VII- End 1978

At 23 years old : I seized the opportunity of my professional life :

I integrated myself into a strongly growing group: Matériaux Service, operating in the production and distribution of products related to private houses. I was positioned to lead, in a branch in Senlis (Oise-France), a team of 15 people the age of whom was 35 years on average.

My experiences combining the professional occupation and the studies greatly contributed to this exceptional opening.

This experience confirmed the strategic pertinence of Learning- School-Enterprise Interpenetration – and this applies to all the functions. The complete opening-up (barrier-breaking down)

Being a young foreigner with a little experience of only 3 years in France, I, however, accepted the position without hesitation.

I concentrated my energy on the realization of progresses in my department with the participation of the team that I led during 4 years: some of my teammates then revealed to me that at the beginning they didn’t think that I could stand even for some days !

After this experience, I was promoted to the Financial and External Development Direction of the group.

The example of my experience shows that courage, daring and tenacity are the qualities reachable by any young person, of whatever origin he comes from, to progressively open the door to his career.

And the situation today, in an upside down world but which is becoming a global village, is in fact much more open than it was 35 years ago.

These qualities themselves, however, are not sufficient

I succesfully took up the challenge because the courage of my acts is primarily guided by the public interest of the enterprise: I called it the collective commitment.

I was not the owner of the enterprise but I felt myself to be owner of the progresses to be accomplished: it was my primary motivation.

Every young person should have this « high spirit » (the interest of the community taking precedence over his personal interest)

He should not be motivated by himself, but by the improvements to the benefit of his community.

And he never seeks an alibi in others, even they are the most positioned people, he will always try by himself to set example of courage.

This collective interest makes the commitment meaningful : it is the collective sense.

VIII- 1988 - 33 years old: the beginning of the « entrepreneurial » adventure.

The creation from zero of Corèle International in the Lingerie industry.

The group employs today 10 000 people worldwide and aims for the world leader position in its industry by the year 2013-2014.

This result is made realizable by the spirit of values mobilized by an exemplary leadership, developing the collective commitment and sense at the heart of the enterprise.

- The mobilization of values

The group created the position of Central Values Vice-President.

This Vice-President comes from the field: he manages a subsidiary of the group! Before his arrival, this subsidiary has sustained losses for many years. He focused his management team’s transformation energy, during the first 2 years of his mandate, on the application of progresses on the common values of the group into the daily functioning of the subsidiary. And he put it back on its feet by this exceptional mobilization, the engine of which was that he set him up as an example.

He now assumes his operational responsibility half-time, having promoted a local manager to operate the daily functioning of the subsidiary. In his remaining half-time, he begins his new structural responsibility in the group.

I’m convinced, from personal experience, that the social performance, enabled by an effective and demanding system of values, is the origin of the economic performance and that ultimately these 2 kinds of performance feed one another, being the 2 complementary forces of the same ambition”. The village will be provided with services and facilities: Nurseries – Cultural space – Sport areas - Commerce

The value of opening-up (barrier breaking)

1 – The barrier-breaking social capitalism = Capital unified to work = Employees shareholders entrepreneurs

The Key Members Home of the group has 700 members up to now and should be open more.

The goal is that each key member, who may be a sewing worker, has ultimately up to about 5 years of salary in the shares of the group.

2 – A multicultural management team = The Franco-Vietnamese hard core, open to other nationalities.

. The group is recruiting both graduates with no experiences and experienced seniors: The group has recently integrated a new Industrial Director aged 52.

3 – Enterprise-School Interpenetration and Universities.

. To develop learning within the group for all the positions, in close cooperation with schools : the pre-recruitment.

. The Chief Financial Officer of the group was a teacher of management in French Universities.

- The exemplarity of Leadership

I give almost 80% of my time for training within the group, which includes strongly the transmission and the permanent reminder of values.
